How we met: ‘I would ply him with wine just so I could speak to a grownup’

University lecturer Kate Watkins, 56, and Stuart Roebuck, 61, who works for a transport company, met when their daughters became friends in 2005. But it was 11 years before they fell in love

In September 2005, Kate Watkins was a single mum raising four children. That year, her story was followed by the Guardian, where she was featured discussing the challenges of family life. She had already met her future husband, Stuart, but she didn’t know it.

“When my eldest girl, Alice, went to secondary school 14 years ago, she made friends with Stuart’s twin daughters, Lotte and Maddy,” Kate explains. At the time he was married to their mum, but often came to pick the girls up from Kate’s house.
