“I’m not going to say that I snuck in,” says David Powell, remembering the end of Maddie Newton’s previous relationship in 2017. “But I thought: ‘Give it a go if I’m really this crazy about her.’”
They had met the year before at a bar in Brussels. David’s friend had come over from the UK and forced him out on a Saturday night – “We’d been out the night before, so I wasn’t feeling particularly amazing” – and he was getting ready to go home early. “Then, all of a sudden, he says: ‘Hi, Maddie, how are you?’” says David. They had bumped into mutual friends.
